Quarter 1 2024 Recap

Quarter one is a wrap and we started the year with a bang!

Let’s get into it…

Rest and Refresh at Rep.Club

We started 2024 off with rest and self-care. This was a beautiful rainy day where we browsed the shelves of Rep.Club, a Black Queer Woman-owned bookshop. Participants took slow moments for themselves while putting together puzzles, journaling and browsing and shopping for books.

Self Love Spa

This was our first event in our new Compton G.IRLS Clubhouse! The day consisted of facials, career chats from BIPOC beauty entrepreneurs, and yoga hosted by Cuties L.A.

KCAL news covered the day and you can watch that footage HERE

G.IRL Scouts visit the Skirball Museum

Our girls began and completed working on their “Creativity and Tinkering” badge which centers reusing sustainable materials and being creative with items that would end up in a landfill.

The Skirball museum currently has an exhibit based on “Noah’s Ark” and all of the animals are made from recycled and repuprosed items.

Luna Luna Forgotten Fantasy

Our girls visited the Luna Luna Forgotten Fantasy exhibit in DTLA!

This exhibit featured an art carnival that had been lost and now discovered after 30 years. It feautured artist such as Dali, Basquiat, Keith Haring and other heavy hitters of their time.

Afterward our we had lunch at RowDTLA | Smorgasburg where our members were able to taste gourmet foods from various cultures.

This was one of our girls favorite trips.

Cyber G.IRL 2024 begins!

Our award winning coding cohort “Cyber G.IRL” started up again this year.

This is a program where are girls create a digital magazine from scratch. They create the articles, the graphic design and yes, CODE the website by themselves.

We partner with “The Hidden Genius Project” for our coding education that is led by teens! OurWatts bookshop for our journalist portion. And Hunnibuzz for our Graphic Designers.

We can’t wait to see the final project in 2 months.

G.IRL Art Sessions

For our first open art session in our new space we met with artist Alexandria Douzeich to learn how we can use portrait art to tell our own stories.

G.IRL Scouts X REI

Our G.IRL Scouts got a private tour of REI in Manhattan Beach to prep for their upcoming camping trip for Earth Day.

They learned about safety and proper camping equipment and then had to demonstarte their new knowledge with a scavenger hunt in store.

Thanks REI!

Women’s History Month Mentor Walk with With|Creators

With|Creators hosted a nature walk with mentors from within their community of women. Our girls were paired with women in career fields that they showed interest in.

Our girls were also given gifts from Elf Cosmetics, Essentials and Adidas Originals.

Such a beautiful day and exploration of L.A.

Journey to Dream hosted by Jumpman

The girls were inivited to The Jumpman HQ in DTLA in an experience that dared them to “dream”.

The day hosted by Jumpman 23 member and multi disciplanary artist Laci Jordan included a mediation and soundbath moment, vision boards, floral arrangements and of course gifts from Jordan Brand

Last, but certainly not least….

We have officially acquired our own G.IRL Clubhouse. This will be our headquarters and event space to house our events and Compton G.IRLS Club.

The building is located at Community Lutheran Church in Willowbrook. It is in good condition for a building built in the 40’s but we will need to put some love into it.

Stay tuned for ways you can help us make this space a beautiful space where girls can dream, grow and build community with each other.

In the meantime, please consider donating to us so we can build out this center for the girls.

If you cannot donate money, please consider new items, or contractor skills

We are open to ALL girls and gender-nonconforming youth and teens within Compton, Watts, Willowbrook, Gardena, South Central, North Long Beach, and surrounding neighborhoods.

All of our programs are FREE and open to the public.

Grants and donations cover our programs. If you can support us, please consider donating to keep our work robust, engaging, and accessible to our community.
