March Recap 2023

March was a whirlwind, and we had some exciting programs!

Let’s get into it…

Cyber G.IRL 2023 is still in motion…

We are now in the 5th week of our Anthem Award-winning coding cohort. We have created outlines for our articles and mood boards for our artistic vision and began laying our coding foundations.

We can’t wait to see the final project!

Various aged girl scouts playing with puppies

G.IRL Scout puppy play day

To reward our G.IRL Scouts for all the hard work they have been doing learning about animals, including but not limited to Safety, budgeting for pets, careers with animals, and taking care of animals; we held a special puppy play day for them.

Super cute!

Natural Flower Dyeing Workshop

We worked with Nyende, who led us in a workshop that showed us how to make unique designs using flowers, herbs, and wood.

Each participant created a bandana using the techniques learned in class.

Cake Sculpture Workshop

We met with artist Monica Juarez to create Cake Sculptures inspired by Mexican American artist Yvette Mayorga.

Each participant utilized clay to make cakes that expressed their individuality.

Foot Locker Fridays

On St. Patrick’s Day, FootLocker Compton hosted a special paint night for Compton G.IRLS Club hosted by Compton Native Muralist Mel Depaz.

Each participant was able to create their own Women’s History Month-inspired painting. Foot Locker fed and gifted each painter a $75 gift card.

Talk about getting the pot o’ gold!

Sunday reset

We met with Healing Practitioner Allie Brown, who led us in a tea blending experience, journaling activity, self-massage, AND a relaxing sound bath.

One of our girls even played alongside her.

Thank you, LA County Parks, for making us a CORE Community Partner and granting us space at the beautiful Magic Johnson Recreation Space.

And to round out our month…

Our G.IRL Scouts built and painted birdhouses to lead us into Earth Month.

They also learned about oil spills, protecting our oceans, and recycling.

WHEW!

We can’t wait to share our April programs with you. We are open to ALL girls and gender-nonconforming youth and teens within Compton, Watts, Willowbrook, Gardena, South Central, North Long Beach, and surrounding neighborhoods.

All of our programs are FREE and open to the public.

Grants and donations cover our programs. If you can support us, please consider donating to keep our work robust, engaging, and accessible to our community.
