The Art of Self-Portraiture with Alex Douziech

Join us Saturday March 3rd for an Art History lesson with Alex Douziech, @alexandriadouziech.

The Art of Self-Portraiture

Join us for an engaging discussion and workshop led by artist Alexandria Douziech, as we journey through the world of self-portraiture. We’ll explore renowned self-portraits in painting, drawing, and photography from diverse cultures and time periods. Together, we’ll delve into the techniques and motivations behind these iconic self-portraits, gaining a deeper understanding of how and why artists chose to represent themselves in their art.

This exploration will serve as a springboard for participants to design and create their own unique self-portraits. The session will then conclude with a presentation where participants can share their artistic creations and the stories they tell.

No prior art experience is necessary, just bring your creativity and an open mind!

Alexandria Douziech is a research-based artist and art educator. Drawing inspiration from her parentage — her mother was born on a sugarcane plantation in Guyana and her father was raised on a canola farm in Canada — her work centers on nature, exploitation, and labor. Alexandria holds a BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

In addition to her artistic practice, Alexandria has made significant contributions to art education in Los Angeles. She has worked with various museums including the California African American Museum (CAAM) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). As a lead educator at MOCA, she spearheaded adult education initiatives and launched community programs that fostered connections between the museum and local nonprofits such as the Downtown Women’s Shelter, My Friend’s Place, and Skid Row Housing Trust. Currently, she teaches courses like “Visual Art and the Human Experience” and “Seminar in Critical Race Theory” at AMDA College of Performing Arts in Hollywood, CA.

Alexandria is also the founder of the Center for Plants & Culture. This BIPOC educational platform is dedicated to exploring societal narratives through the study of plants—providing insights into our collective past and potential future.
